Western Red Cedar Board on Board fence, Vienna, VA
Cedar–a renewable source–is mostly grown in the northwestern part of our country and Canada and is easily distinguishable by its beautiful reddish hues.
Cedar trees take a long time to grow which results in true straight-grain boards without knots. For the same reason, the grain is tight and the boards do not shrink or warp as is typical of pressure treated pine.
Its distinct aromatic smell is pleasant to the senses and acts a natural insect repellent. Cedars’ natural chemical composition makes it rot and pest resistant, which accounts for the long lifespan of a cedar fence, 15 to 20 years! In comparison a pressure treated pine fence last only 10 to 15 years.
Beauty, stability and durability make a cedar fence a better wood fence, their simply isn’t a better natural material.
